Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris has been placed in a medically induced coma following what his family has described as a critical medical emergency earlier this month.
Paris, 58, was hospitalized on Aug. 6, shortly before the group was due to perform with Lionel Richie at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The show was postponed minutes before it was scheduled to begin, with the band citing “a medical emergency involving a member of our band.”
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that crews responded to a report of a cardiac incident at the venue and transported one person to a hospital in critical condition, though the family has not publicly confirmed the nature of Paris’ condition.
In an update shared to Facebook on Thursday (Aug. 13) by Shelly Clark White, the wife of Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White, the family said doctors placed Paris in an induced coma on arrival at the hospital so they could provide critical care. “From the very beginning, Kathy and daughter Kyla remained by his side,” the statement read, referring to Paris’ wife, musician Kathy Merrick, and their daughter.
The update said Paris briefly regained consciousness at one point, opening his eyes and asking for his wife. After seeing her, he turned to a close friend and joked, “Get me outta here.” The family described the moment as bringing “tears, laughter, hugs and renewed hope,” but said it was short-lived, as Paris soon experienced rising blood pressure and difficulty breathing, prompting doctors to sedate him again so his body could stabilize.
“John’s journey is far from over,” the statement concluded. “There is so much hope that surrounds him.” A GoFundMe campaign established to support Paris and his family has raised nearly $70,000 toward a $75,000 goal, with several of his bandmates among the donors.
Earth, Wind & Fire resumed their tour two days after the postponed show, with former member Sonny Emory filling in on drums. The San Francisco concert has been rescheduled for Sept. 26. Paris joined the band in 2001, playing on studio albums including 2003’s The Promise and 2005’s Illumination, and has also worked with artists including Patti LaBelle and Sheila E.
Formed in Chicago in 1969 by the late Maurice White, Earth, Wind & Fire became one of the most successful and influential groups in American music, selling more than 90 million records worldwide with a blend of R&B, funk, soul, jazz and pop. The band scored their sole Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with 1975’s “Shining Star,” which also topped the Hot Soul Songs chart and won a Grammy, while enduring hits including “September,” “Boogie Wonderland” and “Let’s Groove” — their biggest Hot 100 hit, at No. 3 — became staples of the era. The group topped the Billboard 200 with 1975’s That’s the Way of the World and Gratitude, won six Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
The band is currently the subject of a Questlove-directed documentary that premiered in June.
Lisa Knowles-Smith and Darrel Walls were the big winners at the 2026 Stellar Gospel Music Awards, which were taped live from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday (Aug. 15). Gospel superstar Kirk Franklin hosted the show.
Knowles-Smith, 42, won five awards, four of them for the hit album Revival: Live in Dallas, which she recorded with The Brown Singers. Knowles-Smith won the Albertina Walker female artist of the year award; duo/chorus/group of the year and quartet of the year alongside The Brown Singers; producer of the year in tandem with Frederick Perry; and song of the year for “Promises (Live),” which she wrote under her real name, Alescia Knowles-Smith. The song reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart in June.
Walls, 35, won two awards: artist of the year and contemporary male artist of the year, both for Heart of Mine.
Vincent Bohanan & SOV won three awards, all for their album Live in New York: album of the year, choir of the year (in a tie with JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise), and contemporary choir of the year.
Other artists with two wins were Jonathan McReynolds, John P. Kee, Jekalyn Carr and The Brown Singers.
Kim Person had tied with John P. Kee for the most nominations this year (seven each), but she was not a winner on the night.
In addition, Tasha Cobbs Leonard was presented with the Aretha Franklin Icon Award. Pastor Mike Jr. received the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award.
The show will premiere on The Stellar Network, available on Charter Spectrum and Verizon Fios, with the broadcast debuting on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. ET with an encore presentation at 10 p.m. ET. The celebration will make its national cable premiere on BET on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 8 p.m. ET and 10:30 p.m. ET before expanding to audiences nationwide through broadcast TV syndication from Sept. 5 through Sept. 27. In Charlotte, WBTV (CBS) will serve as the local television broadcast partner. Bounce TV will air the ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. ET.
The 41st Stellar Gospel Music Awards is executive produced by Don Jackson (founder of the Stellar Awards and chairman of Central City Productions, Inc.) with Jennifer J. Jackson serving as producer and executive in charge of production; Michael A. Johnson as producer and director, Erin Johnson-Pressley as talent producer, and Daniel Moore as music director.

‘Violent Fairy Pop Core’ reads the block-capitals slogan emblazoned across Ariana Grande’s new, hardcore-inspired merch line. It appears to be the singer’s personal embodiment of the sound and aesthetic of her latest LP, Petal, which arrived last month (July 29) and feels like a distillation of the music itself: equally ethereal and defiant, with guitar-driven, lightly abrasive sounds propelling themes of femininity, freedom and contending with life in the public eye.
In the fortnight since it dropped, Petal has topped both the Official U.K. Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, with Grande scoring her best single-week performance of the 2020s thus far on the latter. All 12 songs from the album landed in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, while the newly-released video for its title track has also sparked intense online discourse about the singer’s physical appearance. The conversation has, at times, threatened to eclipse the contents of a project that is already preoccupied with the pressures of visibility.
Suffice to say, then, that Grande arrives in London at a charged moment. It makes for a particularly intriguing juncture in the wider Petal campaign, which has had a notably darker, disillusioned and more confrontational feel across its lyrics and imagery compared to the singer’s previous output — particularly given that, earlier in the month (Aug. 2), her representatives confirmed she is set to take a hiatus once these shows conclude her Eternal Sunshine Tour. She has also pulled out of leading the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, which was expected to open next summer in the capital.
That sense of an ending — or, to reference a previous Grande project title, a “bye for now” — inevitably hung over opening night at The O2 (Aug. 15), the first of a sold-out 10-show residency at the 20,000-capacity arena. The venue was previously at the center of the 33-year-old’s 2020 Netflix special, Excuse Me, I Love You, and it’s one she will call home again through Sept. 1.
But if Grande is approaching these shows as a farewell to this particular chapter, and potentially a more significant break from the spotlight, she certainly isn’t performing like someone ready to quietly bow out. It was an evening blazing with vertiginous vocal runs, an abundance of intricate video imagery, as well as live sample looping and the fans’ elaborate ‘fit checks and fervent enthusiasm.

Los Angeles officially belongs to K-pop this weekend with KCON LA 2026, but the city has been deep in K-pop all week.
This year’s KCON festival officially opened Friday (Aug. 14) at the Los Angeles Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena. Under the theme “Walk in SOUL CITY,” a play on the South Korean capital, festival producer CJ ENM is stretching 2026’s convention across K-pop, K-beauty, K-food and K-story programming, including the first-ever Olive Young Festa K-Beauty Playground, which boasts 55 different Korean brands. But by the time doors opened on day one, the city had already been running on K-pop culture for days.
HYBE America started things Wednesday with an industry party under the theme of “K-Pop’s Biggest Weekend.” The U.S. branch of the Korean-entertainment giant had a red carpet, photo booths, cotton candy machines and members of its global roster — boy bands &TEAM and Santos Bravos, as well as their pre-debut girl group SAINT SATINE — alongside Eric Nam, Ji-young Yoo and other cast members from K-Pop: The Debut, the Paramount and HYBE America film due in theaters in February 2027. The same night, YEONJUN of TOMORROW X TOGETHER played a special showcase for Billboard Live while &TEAM held a session at the GRAMMY Museum, where EVAN also appeared this week.
Running underneath it all has been the retail circuit, which has quietly become a parallel festival of its own. Retailers like hello82, KPop Nara, Makestar and Araise have staged near-daily signings and fan events with artists like Wonho, ZEROBASEONE, izna, MEOVV, KickFlip, KiiiKiii and more, allowing them to meet local fans directly.
The KCON festival grounds opened at 10 a.m. P.T., with the Artist Stage, Dance Stage and Toyota Music Den Stage all featuring multiple artists throughout the day before the night’s M Countdown concert next door at the Crypto.com Arena. And KCON’s centerpiece concert arrives with a structural change this year. For the first time in its history, the daily headliners are performing full hour-long sets rather than the abbreviated, TV-ready festival runs the event has always utilized.
Since launching as a one-day event in Irvine, Calif., in 2012, KCON has served as an important American proving ground for acts including BTS, TWICE, SEVENTEEN and ATEEZ well before they were selling out stadiums and arenas on their own. Last year, the city officially designated Aug. 1, 2025 as “KCON Day.”
