Over the last few years, virtuosic bluegrass player Billy Strings has become an arena artist on the strength of his lightning-quick picking, psychedelic improvisation and Deadhead-like following, the Billy Goats. But concurrently, the 33-year-old from Michigan has developed a reputation as one of the Americana space’s most gifted young songwriters and accomplished recording artists: His five most recent albums all received Grammy nominations for best bluegrass album, with three (2019’s Home and 2024’s Live Vol. 1 and Highway Prayers) winning in the category.
In short, Strings – who won entertainer of the year at the International Bluegrass Music Awards in three consecutive years earlier this decade – is the complete package. Still, his pen remains underrated — but expect that to change with So Much for Goodbyes, his expansive, emotional fifth studio album. Days after releasing Renewal in September 2024, Strings welcomed his first child, and less than a year later, Strings’ mother died of a drug overdose; both permeate Goodbyes, which grapples with grief and sorrow but has an undercurrent of rebirth and prosperity. Strings’ late mother created the album’s artwork.
“I made this record to honor my mother,” Strings said upon the album’s announcement. “To notice and embrace this very significant period of grief in my life and make art from it. To turn my heartbreak into songs while using my guitar as a coping mechanism as I always have. It’s always been there for me to lean on through the hard times, and I figure it always will… until it’s my time to say goodbye.”
While Strings is the star of the show, he’s joined here by an impressive supporting cast: his longtime band of Billy Failing (banjo), Royal Masat (bass), Jarrod Walker (mandolin) and Alex Hargreaves (fiddle) backs him for most of the record, and legends including Del McCoury, Alison Krauss and Bryan Sutton make guest appearances. Co-produced by the revered T Bone Burnett (alongside Strings himself), the record even features a vocal cameo from Jack White.
Fans of Strings’ mind-bending live excursions won’t find many extended jams among these 16 songs, none of which surpass seven minutes — but there’s Live Vol. 1, not to mention a trove of officially released concert recordings, for that. Instead, Strings has crafted something even more impressive: An instant addition to the canon of great Americana albums born from personal upheaval.

Bruno Mars will get romantic will fans next year across Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
The R&B star announces 27 new stadium shows across the region in 2027, and adds a fifth Mexico City later this year, “due to overwhelming demand,” notes the tour promoter Live Nation.
Announced Thursday, Aug. 27, the new run follows previously-announced shows in Japan in January. Mars’ latest tour down under will get underway Feb. 13, 2027 at Optus Stadium in Perth, and heads east for multiple nights in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, and Auckland, before returning to Asia with four nights at Singapore’s National Stadium, starting April 13.
Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Tyla will join Mars as special guest on all AU/NZ shows, while his nine-time Grammy winner and Silk Sonic collaborator Anderson .Paak will perform as DJ Pee .Wee on all newly announced shows.
Before that run, Mars’ fans in Mexico will get a fifth concert in the capital at Estadio GNP Seguros, booked for Friday, Dec. 11.
With the announcement, The Romantic Tour now spans more than 115 stadium shows across North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico, including six nights at London’s Wembley Stadium; and five nights each at Rogers Stadium in Toronto, SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and BC Place in Vancouver.
The tour is in support of Mars’ fourth studio album, The Romantic, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in March of this year. Mars last led the tally with his second full-length studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox, which climbed to No. 1 in March 2013, nearly three months after its release. The Romantic is Mars’ first No. 1-debuting album on the all-genres U.S. chart, and his fifth top 10 appearance, including An Evening With Silk Sonic, which went to No. 2 in 2021.
In Australia, The Romantic opened at No. 2 on the ARIA Chart, extending his unbroken streak of top 5 albums (including a three week stint at No. 1 with Unorthodox Jukebox).

Whitney Houston won two Grammys for her blockbuster hit “I Will Always Love You” at the 36th Grammy Awards on March 1, 1994. She took record of the year and best pop vocal performance, female.
As the producer of the smash, David Foster shared the award for record of the year and also won producer of the year, non-classical, largely because of his work on the hit. But Dolly Parton wasn’t recognized for writing the song. She would have been a shoo-in to win song of the year but wasn’t eligible. She had first recorded the song in 1974, taking it to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs.
So, songs that were already well-known weren’t eligible? That rule has changed over the years.
Just two years earlier, Irving Gordon won song of the year for “Unforgettable,” which had been a pop standard for 40 years at that point, since Nat King Cole and Doris Day had recorded it in the early 1950s. Dinah Washington had a top 20 hit on the Hot 100 with the song in 1959. It won in 1992 because Natalie Cole’s sentimental recording of the song as a duet with her late father brought it back to prominence.
“Unforgettable” is a great song, no doubt, but should it have taken the top songwriting award in 1992 against such great contemporary songs as R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” or Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis” (both of which were also nominated in that category)?
The Recording Academy decided the eligibility rule needed to be tightened, so already famous songs wouldn’t be eligible. That was bad news for Parton’s song, even though it was no more famous pre-The Bodyguard than “Unforgettable” was prior to Natalie Cole’s revival of the song.
The Grammys have tinkered with the rules on song of the year (and also best new artist, for different reasons) many times, trying to strike just the right balance. The current rule states: “A song … must have been released on a recording for the first time, or achieved prominence for the first time, during the current eligibility period.”
Most of the song of the year winners in Grammy history were new songs that year, or songs that weren’t previously widely known. Jimmy Driftwood’s “The Battle of New Orleans,” which won in 1960, was written way back in 1936, but had not been a hit until country star Johnny Horton covered it in 1959.

J. Cole has canceled his concert scheduled for Thursday night (Aug. 27) at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California, following the death of a member of his touring crew.
The venue announced the cancellation in a statement on Instagram, sharing that the crew member had died in a trucking accident earlier that morning.

“Following the tragic passing of a member of the touring crew in a trucking accident this morning, J. Cole’s performance at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento tonight, August 27, has been canceled,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts are with the crew member’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
No additional details regarding the accident or the identity of the crew member were immediately provided.
Ticket holders who purchased their tickets through Ticketmaster will receive refunds automatically and do not need to take any further action, according to the announcement. Those who purchased tickets through third-party resellers are advised to contact their point of purchase.
The Sacramento stop was scheduled as part of J. Cole’s The Fall-Off Tour, his first solo headlining tour in five years and his first global run in nearly a decade. The tour supports his seventh studio album, The Fall Off, and is scheduled to visit more than 50 cities across more than 15 countries. His next scheduled dates are set for Oakland, California, on Saturday (Aug. 28) and Sunday (Aug. 29), as well as Los Angeles dates on Tuesday (Sept. 1) and next Thursday (Sept. 3). It is unclear whether any upcoming shows will be affected.

André 3000 (born André Benjamin) is heading to Coolsville. According to Deadline, Three Stacks has been cast in Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins series.
The live-action series — which arrives globally on the streaming giant in 2027 — has already started filming in Atlanta for the reimagining of the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, which also saw a sequel released in 2004.
As Outkast, André 3000 and Big Boi — with some help from fellow Dungeon Family members Sleepy Brown and Killer Mike — contributed to the 2002 Scooby-Doo soundtrack with “Land of a Million Drums,” which gained popularity across the pond, peaking at No. 46 on the U.K. Singles chart.
Raging Bull actress Cathy Moriarty also joined the Scooby-Doo: Origins cast in an unknown recurring role, like Three Stacks.
The rest of the cast is rounded out by Mckenna Grace (Daphne), Tanner Hagen (Shaggy), Abby Ryder Fortson (Velma) and Maxwell Jenkins (Fred). Toby Haynes is onboard to executive produce and direct the series’ first episode.
The Grammy-winning rapper has a plethora of acting experience. He starred as Jimi Hendrix in 2013’s Jimi: All Is By My Side biopic and notched roles in High Life, Four Brothers, Idlewild, Revolver and Be Cool.
André 3000 has dabbled in the cartoon universe in the past. He created Class of 3000, which aired from 2006 through 2008 and served as the last Cartoon Network original series.
Since Outkast stopped recording (the duo’s last album arrived in 2006), the 51-year-old has been experimenting outside of rap. He released the 7 Piano Sketches project in 2025, and delivered his New Blue Sun flute album in 2023.

Criminal charges have been dismissed against the man accused of stalking Sabrina Carpenter after a judge ruled him mentally incompetent.
According to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, a judge overruled prosecutors’ objections on Tuesday (Aug. 25) and held that 31-year-old William Applegate is too mentally unwell to stand trial. Applegate is still subject to a restraining order that requires him to stay away from Carpenter for five years.
The pop star alleged in a May legal petition that Applegate, “a complete stranger,” had surveilled her L.A. home for a month before attempting to break in. The singer said Applegate falsely claimed to know her personally, “indicative of a dangerous, delusional and irrational fixation on me.”
“The totality of Applegate’s conduct has caused me significant and ongoing fear for my personal safety and the safety of all individuals residing in my home,” wrote Carpenter in a court declaration. “Applegate has repeatedly and willfully violated the sanctity and security of my private residence. His act of physically attempting to open and enter my front door, without invitation, consent or any lawful basis is among the most disturbing violations of personal safety and privacy I have ever experienced.”
Applegate opposed Carpenter’s requested restraining order, insisting that he and Carpenter are part of the same “classified military-government program.” In June, a judge in downtown L.A. ordered Applegate to stay at least 100 yards away from the singer’s home, car and workplaces until 2031.
The following day, Applegate was criminally charged with eight misdemeanor counts including stalking, disorderly conduct, battery and trespassing. But after a psychiatric evaluation, a different judge in Hollywood threw out those criminal charges due to mental incompetency on Tuesday.
Applegate’s attorneys and reps for Carpenter did not immediately return requests for comment on the matter on Thursday (Aug. 27).
While stalking has long been a disturbing consequence of fame, the problem has worsened in recent years due to social media; fans now interact more directly with their favorite artists, which can lead to unhealthy obsession for those with mental illness. The internet has also made it easier for stalkers to locate their targets.
This has increasingly led artists like Carpenter to seek legal intervention. Multiple individuals have been criminally charged over the last decade with stalking Taylor Swift, who also got a restraining order against another stalker last year.
This past April, a woman named Michelle Dick was charged with physically attacking Fleetwood Mac frontman Lindsey Buckingham after years of threats. Like Applegate, Dick has since been ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial.

The two sat down for the premiere episode of The Vic Mensa Show and hashed things out after years of avoiding their personal grievances with each other, which led to a tearful and heartfelt conversation between old friends. Mensa explained his own personal animosity came from being jealous of Chance’s success around the time he dropped his critically acclaimed mixtapes Acid Rap and Coloring Book.
“The intense rivalry of our creative process and then like seeing you in so much success, it grew jealousy in me, you what I’m saying?” he admitted before apologizing.
Chance accepted his apology and stated that he wouldn’t be sitting there if he hadn’t already forgiven him before then apologizing for something himself. “Let me say sorry because there was something that was on my mind while you was just talking that I’ve always wanted to apologize for,” he told Vic. “And I think we talked about it before, but if we didn’t, I still need to apologize.
“One thing that I did that I always felt bad about was — this is around Acid Rap — I don’t even know if the tour ended up happening,” he continued. “But I remember Cara was trying to book me a tour, and she was like, ‘You should have Vic open.’ And I was like, ‘No.’ And I said at the time that I didn’t want to do it ’cause I was like, ‘Vic’s not opening for me. We at the same level. He doesn’t need to be opening.’ But in reality, I was just like, ‘I don’t want to have to split this. I don’t wanna have to share this stage at this point.’ And that was definitely bogus.”
Vin accepted his apology and held back tears as he thought back to how much he needed the money he would’ve gotten from the tour during that particular period of his life and admitted that he was going through couch cushions and his sister’s piggybank looking for some money. “I knew I had motion and I was right there,” a tearful Mensa said. “But that really hurt me, you know, ’cause I was like, ‘Damn, I actually really I need this.’”
